HarperCollins Focus is seeking a Data Scientist to spearhead our consumer-first publishing program. This key position will leverage internal and external consumer data to drive informed decision-making across our organization. The role encompasses analyzing data to guide product development, shape marketing strategies, forecast sales potential, and accelerate online data growth.

The ideal candidate will blend strong analytical and algorithmic skills with excellent communication abilities. They will have a proven track record in developing predictive models, designing and implementing experiments, and creating tools for strategic product decisions. This role requires a collaborative approach, working seamlessly with teams within HarperCollins Christian Publishing, HarperCollins Focus, and external partners. The ability to distill complex data insights into clear, actionable recommendations for publishing teams is crucial.









Responsibilities






  • Working with internal and external data on the development and implementation of data-driven strategies for a consumer-driven publishing program.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret large datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Utilize advanced statistical techniques and data mining tools to analyze data and generate actionable insights.
  • Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders clearly and concisely.
  • Build predictive models using regression and machine learning techniques.
  • Analyze market trends and title metadata to increase sales and discoverability.
  • Design and analyze experiments to support publishing decisions, drive reporting, and advance the publishing program.
  • Support the design and implementation of tests, data-driven processes, and tools to advance publishing capabilities.
  • Review and report on the outcome of publishing titles by units, net revenue, and profitability.
  • Partner with Data Science and IT teams to develop tools for result analysis and create automation tools to scale consumer-driven publishing.
  • Research data-driven publishing opportunities to support the team’s effort to identify, evaluate, and introduce new data and research sources to internal consumers.








Qualifications






Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in a scripting language and data analysis tools.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Looker, Domo, Tableau.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Mastery of the English language for written and oral communication to efficiently and succinctly communicate with individuals or large groups.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex data findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand and analyze publishing financial documentation and reporting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and strategically.
  • Knowledge of the publishing industry and its data analytics needs is highly desirable.
  • Experience with machine learning and predictive analytics is a plus.

Work Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of experience in data analysis, preferably within the publishing or media industry.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.

The salary range for this position is $100,000-$110,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company.  As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure we are able to attract the best candidates.  The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
