Would you like to be part of the interdisciplinary team providing vital insights into the rapidly evolving media landscape for Disney’s suite of television networks (ABC, ESPN, Freeform, FX, National Geographic, Disney Channel, etc.)? Join our Data & Analytics Operations team, whose mission is to develop, support, and improve analytics operations to deliver data-driven insights and drive efficiencies across the Research, Insights & Analytics group in Disney Entertainment (DE). We highly value statistical modeling and machine learning approaches, but also balance traditional data science methods with financial modeling practices and business expertise – merging the science with the art.

Job Summary:

As a Data Scientist on the Disney Entertainment (DE) Research, Insights & Analytics team, you’d put your talent to use developing and improving predictive models providing insights into advertising across Disney’s television portfolio. Primarily, modeling will be in support of viewership forecasting (in partnership with Linear and Digital forecasting teams to optimize Ad Sales revenue, in support of the DTCI P&L’s. You’ll develop new models to provide greater forecasting accuracy, build dashboards and visualizations to share model results and insights, as well as enhance storytelling over complex data. We are looking for a self-starter with a passion for writing code and digging into data with creativity and efficiency.

Responsibilities:

Data Quality: Ensure data is as clean as possible and a reliable source of truth, escalating anomalies and developing workarounds where needed; Handle data manipulation for feature engineering when appropriate.

Statistical Modeling: Design and develop new predictive models leveraging statistical and machine learning methods to measure and project a user’s engagement with the Disney platforms across many KPIs; Dig into drivers of change when interpreting forecasts and drive changes to the science in the forecast that will enhance accuracy.

Business Intelligence: Build visualizations and interfaces to share results with business stakeholders in an easily digestible, sustainable, and automated manner; Analyze data to identify patterns, uncover opportunities, and create a common understanding of digital media consumption.

Collaboration: Partner closely with peers and business stakeholders to identify and unlock opportunities, and with other data teams to improve capabilities around data modeling, testing platforms, and data visualization.

Process Improvement: Drive innovation by exploring new statistical techniques and brainstorming ways to optimize the existing forecast and reporting infrastructure and make processes even better.

Operations: Apply Agile principles via participating in standups, sprint planning, writing business requirements documents, and retrospectives; Participate in an “Open Source” learning environment where sharing, documenting, teaching, and collaborating with others is the culture.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in SQL and Python (e.g. pandas, numpy, scikit-learn) for data analysis.

  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau).

  • Experience designing and implementing predictive models (generalized linear models, time series, decision trees, etc.).

  • Experience working with Git.

  • Proven sense of responsibility and effective project ownership – you have an aptitude for troubleshooting complex problems with creative solutions.

  • Communication skills – you’re able to shift between technical and non-technical terminology depending on the audience.

  • Natural curiosity - you enjoy digging deeper to find the big picture and are open to learning new technologies.

  • User/Client Oriented – you have strong interpersonal skills, building relationships across teams and functions to earn trust and advance business goals.

  • Humility - you’re able to contribute to the team, ego aside, with an enthusiasm about helping others. 

  • Comfort with messy data and flexibility in dynamic environments.

  • This role is onsite and requires someone in office 4+ days a week in NYC.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ETL, data pipeline management, and cloud infrastructure for managing large amounts of data (e.g. AWS, PySpark, Snowflake, Airflow, Databricks).

  • Experience using web frameworks (Django) and JavaScript libraries (ReactJS, JQuery) to build professional frontend and backend web applications focused on user experience.

Required Education:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Econometrics, Cognitive Science, or equivalent substitute.

The hiring range for this position in New York, NY is $98,000 to $131,300 per year based on a 40 hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
