The A Side: A Day in The Life

Universal Music UK is looking for a data analyst to become part of our in-house creative agency The Square. The role offers a unique opportunity to join us at the start a new chapter within data & technology, where we are looking to grow & expand on the foundation of work we’ve already begun.

The role is perfect for a candidate that is passionate about music, data and technology and has a thirst for acquiring, analysing and communicating knowledge through data. In a creative organisation such as ours, reducing a complex problem into something simple is key, so any experience managing clients would also be a strength.

As well as being proficient in SQL, you should have a strong grasp of ETL processes, advanced troubleshooting skills, the ability to run queries efficiently and a basic knowledge of statistical modelling, This role also requires data to be reduced to simple takeaways for clients, so strong communication and data visualisation skills are also essential. Any machine knowledge a bonus.

As The Square sits centrally, you’ll have a chance to work across all divisions, including frontline labels, our catalogue division UMR, our music content studio Mercury Studios and all other central agencies, as well as data teams within the business. This includes end-to-end product design from the inception of an idea to a fully working piece of technology that supports & supercharges the labels.

At the heart of this role is a desire to give us a competitive edge in connecting our artists with audiences across the globe. More will be explained at Interview. Rest assured, this is an exciting role as part of an innovative new initiative within the organisation.

The B Side: Skills & Experience

Be Data-Driven

  • Supporting core strategic research with data & audience insight
  • Researching & developing data driven solutions to solve current & future business problems
  • Utilising partner data to pull out key metrics and feeding back to the label teams
  • Advising on data related topics to help guide or inform business decisions
  • Sourcing, cleaning and preparing data for modelling, product creation or visualisation
  • Developing new data sets or features that become integral to how the business operates

Be Collaborative

  • Working directly with The Square team to support artists & labels across the business

Person Specification

Necessary

  • Ability to translate complicated datasets into simple, digestible suggestions
  • Creative and innovative approach to problem-solving rather than falling on old habits
  • Strong client engagement, management and translation from problem to solution
  • Ability to lead data projects from ideation to realization
  • Proficient in SQL with knowledge of querying databases accurately and efficiently
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform products (or equivalent AWS), such as BigQuery
  • Familiarity with software development tools such as Git
  • Strong knowledge of ETL processes
  • Proven track record working in a data analyst or related role
  • Background in engaging clients in a consultative or analytical capacity
  • Experience working with development teams to productionise work

Desirable

  • Basic programming knowledge, ideally in Python
  • Basic knowledge of machine learning concepts, techniques and their application
  • Knowledge of music repertoire is advantageous
