Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Data Science & Learning Analytics team is looking for data analysts to help deliver critical digital insights and visualizations to help guide strategy. You will be instrumental in the creation of new datasets, dashboards and metrics that will report on and provide actionable insight to support product development decision-making. You will provide support to the Data Science and Learning Analytics and Psychometrics Teams with migrating data between systems, data lakes, and data marts.

The Data Analyst will have:

  • 3+ years of experience in a data analyst role
  • Experience using scripting languages like SQL, R, or Python to build strategic analytic datasets
  • Experience building dashboards (Shiny, Tableau / etc.)
  • Experience simplifying time-intensive processes through the development of programmatic solutions
  • Manage, organize and present data in a clear, concise, and actionable format to a wide array of audiences
  • Expertise in data documentation, including creation/modification of data dictionaries, handling versioning and quality control of conflicting datasets.
  • Strong analytic, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills and the ability to clearly communicate complex results to technical and non-technical audiences.

Top candidates will have strengths in multiple areas of the following:

  • Advanced knowledge of SQL, scripting languages (R / Python) and Big Data tools
  • Experience with cloud-based services
  • Experience with source control tools such as Git
  • Strong understanding of statistical concepts
  • Experience using quantitative analysis to identify trends and improve business decisions
  • Creativity in developing new processes, analyses, and recommendations

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Make data accessible to a variety of end-users with varied data needs
  • Import, clean, transform, validate, and analyze data with the purpose of understanding and drawing conclusions from data for decision making and product development purposes
  • Integrate data from multiple sources, applying complex rules to create analytic data sets
  • Test data to identify data integrity issues, troubleshooting problems and makes recommendations and coordinating with the Data Scientists/Psychometricians to plan solutions
  • Perform descriptive statistical analyses and build datasets and dashboards that provide actionable insight to key stakeholders
