The Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (OIRE) leverages strategic and transformational data analytics to further the mission and key priorities of Mount Holyoke College. The College seeks an inquisitive and; highly motivated; Data Scientist for Strategic Analytics to support the growing need for advanced analytics. In this role, you will support senior leaders in leveraging data to make decisions that are both operational and strategic. You will conduct data-driven research, problem-solving, and algorithm development through the systematic application of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Position deliverables include building efficient data management pipelines, interactive visualizations, presentations, reports, web applications, predictive algorithms, and APIs. As the inaugural staff data scientist in the OIRE, we are looking for candidates who also support the College’s educational mission and have an interest in building the College’s administrative data science capacity, this includes collaborating with other business units and collaborating with underrepresented students in data science through our student data lab internships.
Core Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Proactively identify, prioritize, and conduct independent analyses and project-related tasks that drive meaningful change on key objectives established by senior leadership.
- Provide ongoing project consultation, maintenance, and process execution.
- Develop algorithms and predictive models for key priorities including, enrollment and student success efforts.
- Create prototype systems, i.e. data pipelines, visualizations, and web applications.
- Assist in the design and analysis of experiments to test the effectiveness of interventions.

Qualifications: ● Degree in a highly quantitative discipline (Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, etc.) ● 3+ years working with data and relevant computational frameworks and systems. ● 3+ years developing of probabilistic models and machine learning algorithms. ● Exceptional problem-solving skills and readiness to learn new concepts, methods, and technologies. ● Proficient understanding of machine learning and probability and statistics. ● Proficient in data analysis using R or Python programming languages. ● Effective communication skills: Ability to “tell the story”.
Preferred Qualifications: ● Experience in SQL and database design. ● Knowledge of web application tools (R Shiny, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and web application frameworks) ● Familiarity with higher education data systems and ERPs, a plus. ● Strong business acumen & demonstrated aptitude for analytics that incite action. ● Exceptional attention to detail and ability to progress multiple analyses in parallel. ● Ability to work effectively across functions, disciplines and levels. ● Commitment to mentorship and the development of the data science profession. ● Demonstrated respect and promotion of inclusion & diversity.

Physical Demands: Employee operates office equipment and computers to perform essential duties and responsibilities.
Working Conditions: The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and extensive reading. -Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound. -Sufficient clarity of speech required includes those which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
