A Data Analyst & Curator (DAC) participates in all phases of equipment configuration, data collection, downloading, processing, curation, and reporting. Primary responsibilities of this role are to acquire, analyse, compile, evaluate, review, and organise storage of data for use in high-level, peer-reviewed scientific publications and industry reports, supporting OSC’s core mission: to work with industry to protect the marine environment. The candidate will take ownership of data quality and ensure that OSC’s data standards are both compliant and achieved. In this role, the candidate will create, monitor, and maintain Master Data, including auditing and validating data consistency within key systems.
 
ESSENTIAL
While the data analysis aspect of the job can be remote, the candidate MUST also work on site at OSC’s current promises in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland, when e.g. configuring instrumentation, curating all OSC’s data for storage, downloading data for instrumentation after surveys, etc.
 
Processing, analysis, evaluation, exploitation, and curation of the following types of data that include but are not limited to: navigation (RADAR), remote sensor, Infra-red (e.g. Forward Looking Infra-Red, FLIR), SONAR, Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)/Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), still photography, shipboard-instrumentation, etc., collected from various global ocean systems.
 
  • Together with consultants, assist in pre-configuration of equipment for deployment offshore;
  • Perform download, analysis, evaluation, and curation of all aspects of OSC’s core metocean data;
  • Involved in pre-mission support, data collection, analyst & evaluation, and report generation;
  • As enhanced data are identified, the candidate will be responsible to update and correct data sets;
  • Use proprietary software including GIS-based systems in a network of workstations and personal computers (Windows) to perform basic imaging enhancement, display, and analytical functions to obtain, organise, and present information relevant to the exploitation of remotely sensed and imaged data obtained from metocean systems;
  • Review mission related data logs, worksheets, and reports to determine focal points for analysis, as well as discovery of deficiencies and discrepancies in performance of data collection equipment and systems;
  • Preparation of formal written technical reports, as well as oral briefs to report analysis findings and conclusions to the senior science team and clients;
  • Some travel is required;
  • Schedule can be demanding throughout the year and work outside normal working hours from time to time should be anticipated;
  • Depending on candidates’ qualifications & at-sea experience, may be required to participate in at sea exercises or data collection missions of various durations. Durations normally are between 15 and 30 days but can be as much as 120 days. Normal annual requirement is 45-60 days;
  • Represent OSC and clients by interacting and participating in meetings, panels, and committees;
  • Production of various ad hoc documentation & deliverables;
  • Maintain configuration control thereby ensuring precise data records; and,
  • Support program reviews and technical reviews of various documentation deliverables.
 
REQUIRED
  • Associate degree in a technical or related field; equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree;
  • Minimum one year of related metocean analysis experience;
  • Background in GIS products, sonar/radar/IR/ROV, etc. processing software;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including SharePoint, Outlook, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.;
  • Ability to obtain a Ministry of Defence (MoD) security clearance may be required;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Must be able to prioritise tasks and work independently and in team settings;
  • Ability to pass and maintain a maritime physical;
  • Be willing to take maritime safety training and meet physical, dental, and regional physical and immunisation requirements; and,
  • Must be able to work legally in the UK.
 
DESIRED
  • Bachelor’s degree in Oceanography, Underwater Archaeology, or related field;
  • Experience with Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), & Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and their support equipment;
  • Experience with Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), underwater noise signal-processing, and Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) data;
  • Experience with, e.g. InfraRed/SLS systems, Sonars, Navigation & underwater cameras equipment; and,
  • Knowledge of products like MATLAB, R., SonarScope, SonarWiz, sonaR R-package, SonarQube, Hypack, OpenSideScan, WinFrog, FLIR Thermal Studio Suite, Fluke Thermal Imaging Software, testo IRSoft, SmartView IR Analysis and Reporting Software, Radar Toolbox (MATLAB), EEC Radar Analysis & Display Software, SARscape, ENVI.
