Organisational Position

The role sits within the Portfolio Management and Insights team, which is a team that provides a variety of key support functions to the organisation. More specifically the role will sit alongside two other Data Analysts and report to the Senior Data Strategy Manager. The Data Analysts and Senior Data Strategy Manager lead on data and analysis across the organisation and are overseen by the Head of Portfolio Management and Insights. The role will include a significant amount of wider organisational engagement as collaboration with teams across the AHRC is a key element of the position.

Team Purpose

The Data Analyst role sits within the Portfolio Management and Insights team, which is a team that provides a variety of key support functions to the organisation across programme management, data and evaluation. The role holder will report to the Data Strategy Manager, working within a small team of Data Analysts, and will work closely with specialist colleagues within the PMI team, as well as collaborating with others in operational functions and the grant funding domain teams across AHRC.

Job Purpose

This role will be responsible for the production of data across the organisation, whilst also engaging with AHRC staff to ensure data analysis drives evidence-based decision making.

By managing and overseeing AHRC’s current reporting dashboards the role will constantly ensure AHRC’s data reporting requirements are effectively met. The role will also deliver wider data and analysis solutions across the AHRC, recommending innovative and creative ways to analyse and present information to inform decision making.

Through the use of AHRC’s current visualisation and analysis tools, the role holder will provide guidance to teams across the organisation, ensuring the most suitable analysis reports are utilised to meet their needs. The position will also contribute to the development of tools and solutions, feeding into further development of UKRI and AHRC’s data and analysis capabilities.

Whilst working closely with AHRC staff the role will provide data to promote the improvement of processes across the organisation. Furthermore, using information from AHRC’s funded research and wider afield, the role will support strategic analysis and activities. Throughout these activities the role will work with colleagues to ensure information is presented in a way that enables staff to effectively make evidence-based decisions. Beyond this the role will be working with Data Analysts across UKRI and engaging with organisations further afield.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Undertaking data preparation tasks using Alteryx and other methods to ensure data sources are well maintained and able to underpin consistent data reports
  • Creation of innovative data visuals in Tableau to enable AHRC to analyse its funding and the wider research landscape
  • Support and fulfilment of general reporting requirements of AHRC
  • Development of data supported Tableau dashboards and general reports to inform and improve the processing of grants administration
  • Providing reports and Tableau dashboards to help inform evaluation activity and to highlight the impact of AHRC funded research
  • Promoting use of data to colleagues across the organisation and supporting wider data reporting collection and analysis
  • Answering of ad-hoc data requests from external collaborators
  • Engaging with other analytical teams across UKRI to share standard process and support harmonisation

Personal Specification  

The below criteria will be scored during Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I).

Essential

  • You are educated to a minimum of degree level, or offer equivalent experience with data analysis. (S&I)
  • Strong technical capability with advanced expertise in Excel, strong working knowledge of Alteryx, and proven experience in data visualisation using Tableau. (S&I)
  • Sound numeric, critical thinking and problem solving skills, with experience of independently preparing data as evidence to support decisions. (S&I)
  • Proven ability to collect reporting requirements from a variety of stakeholders and  producing data reports that meet the needs of the stakeholder. (S&I)
  • Ability to explain technical information to non-technical stakeholders. (I)
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workloads. (I)
  • Strong attention to detail and can produce clear, replicable data reports. (I)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. (I)
  • Strong interpersonal skills with confidence to engage a range of internal stakeholders. (S&I)

Desirable

  • You have an understanding and knowledge of the UK Research Funding landscape. (S&I)
  • Strong working knowledge of SQL, R or Python. (S&I)
